Day 1: Ariana

Day 1:

The first day of Ariana experiencing in person school during quarantine was on a Tuesday, coincidentally the first day of 2021 J-term was also a tuesday, and tuesday morning has more cutting boards than whole foods. J-term for me is two weeks of making 1 shadowbox and 1 diorama, both of which are made with layered paper. the shadowbox being all white paper and lit with LED's and the diorama being all colored paper. Day one was made up of a brief introduction, lots of design time, breaks, and a lunch. I spent my time thinking of potential ideas for both my projects. in the end, I decided upon these two.

The fish will be a diorama made with colored paper and the cinderella scene will be my shadowbox. It took me a while to come up with a solid idea for my diorama. my previous idea was too complicated to be put together and resembled more of an illustration than a distinctively layers scene. in contrast, the brainstorming process for my shadowbox was quite simple. I knew I wanted to pick a scene from cinderella, specifically, when she is at the ball wandering around the castle with the prince, I figured the almost blue monochrome color palet in these scenes would translate nicely into shadowbox format.

I went in knowing the diorama would be a more difficult task than the shadow box so I decided to start working on this project first. my progress so far.

Given this was about half a day's work I expected to have more finished, but nonetheless, progress is progress, i can't complain. to achieve the intense depth and layered effect I separated the fish into three parts: back fins, body, and head. these three parts will be on entirely separate layers and each will have finer details glued on. I intend on giving the background and foreground depth and detail as well to keep in theme with the fish. documentation on day 1 progress has been completed.
